St. Lucia

St. Lucia

Best Months

December–May (dry season)

Trip Length

7–10 days

Best For

Couples and honeymooners, Luxury travelers wanting Caribbean intimacy over resort corridors

The Caribbean's most dramatic island — twin volcanic peaks, a drive-in volcano, a harbor so beautiful sailors detour to see it, and a food scene that's quietly become one of the region's best.

Why Go

  • The Pitons — twin volcanic spires rising from the sea — are among the most spectacular natural landmarks in the Caribbean. No photograph does them justice.

  • Unlike flat, resort-only islands, St. Lucia offers real terrain: hiking, waterfalls, sulfur springs, rainforest. Active travelers get far more than a beach.

  • Soufrière Bay, on the southwest coast below the Pitons, is arguably the most beautiful harbor setting in the entire Caribbean.

  • The island splits neatly into north (resorts, nightlife, Rodney Bay) and south (nature, intimacy, the Pitons). Most trips deserve both.

Sample 7–10 days Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival — Rodney Bay

Arrive at Hewanorra (south) or George Charles (north) airport. Transfer to Rodney Bay or Gros Islet. Settle in. Easy dinner on the Rodney Bay strip.

Day 2

Pigeon Island National Landmark

Pigeon Island — connected to the mainland by a causeway, restored colonial fortifications, views over the northwest coast, beach and lunch at The Jambe de Bois restaurant.

Day 3

Day Trip to Soufrière

Drive or take the water taxi south (water taxi is more scenic). La Soufrière volcano drive-in — the world's only drive-in volcano, steaming, sulfurous, otherworldly. Toraille waterfall swim. Tet Paul Nature Trail for Piton views.

Day 4

Piton Hike — Gros Piton

Early start (guide required) for the Gros Piton hike — 2,619 feet, takes 4–5 hours round trip. The views from the top are among the best in the entire Caribbean. Afternoon recovery at your hotel.

Day 5

Snorkeling & Marine Reserve

Anse Chastanet Marine Reserve has some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean — colorful coral right off the beach. Boat trip along the Pitons coast.

Day 6

Rain Forest & Zipline

Rainforest Adventures St. Lucia — aerial tram through the canopy, optional zipline. Afternoon at Reduit Beach (Rodney Bay's best swimming beach).

Day 7

Marigot Bay & Anse La Raye

Marigot Bay — a sheltered, palm-fringed harbor that was used as a set in Doctor Dolittle. Anse La Raye fish fry on Fridays (a local tradition worth planning around).

Days 8–10

Relaxation & Departure

Remaining time at leisure — spa, beach, sailing charter, local rum tasting at St. Lucia Distillers. Departure from Hewanorra.

When to Go

December–May (dry season). June–November is the wet season — not unvisitable, but expect afternoon showers and lower beach resort ambiance.

Worth Knowing

September–October is peak hurricane risk. Travel insurance is essential if you visit during the wet season.

Best For

  • Couples and honeymooners
  • Luxury travelers wanting Caribbean intimacy over resort corridors
  • Adventure-seekers who want Caribbean scenery with hiking and zip-lining
  • Small groups celebrating a milestone
