Costa Rica

Costa Rica

Best Months

December–April (Pacific dry season)

Trip Length

8–12 days

Best For

Families (excellent infrastructure, safe, English widely spoken), Adventure travelers of any age

Zip through cloud forest canopies. Watch sea turtles nest at midnight. Soak in hot springs beneath an active volcano. Then remember you're in a country the size of West Virginia.

Why Go

  • Costa Rica has 5% of the world's biodiversity in 0.03% of its land area. The wildlife density is astonishing — toucans, sloths, scarlet macaws, howler monkeys, and sea turtles are routinely encountered.

  • The adventure infrastructure is excellent: ziplining, whitewater rafting, surf lessons, and volcano hikes are all world-class and accessible to most fitness levels.

  • The Arenal-Manuel Antonio combination (volcano/jungle to coast) is one of the most satisfying two-zone itineraries in Latin America.

  • 'Pura Vida' is real — the national ethos of easy living and environmental stewardship creates a genuinely warm, unhurried travel experience.

Sample 8–12 days Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival — San José

Land at Juan Santamaría International Airport. San José itself is a transit hub rather than a destination — head immediately to your first zone or stay overnight and leave early.

Days 2–4

Arenal Volcano

La Fortuna is the base town. Arenal volcano hike (partial — the summit is off-limits). Hanging bridges through the cloud forest canopy. White water rafting on the Balsa or Sarapiquí rivers. Evening soak at Tabacón or Baldi hot springs (heated by the volcano).

Day 5

Monteverde Cloud Forest

Transfer to Monteverde (3 hours, often via lake boat to cut road time). Afternoon arrival, settle in. The Cloud Forest starts at dusk — guided night walk to spot kinkajous, red-eyed tree frogs, and glass frogs.

Day 6

Monteverde — Zip-Lines & Bridges

Morning: Selvatura Park hanging bridges — 8 bridges through the cloud forest canopy, misty, ethereal. Afternoon: Extremo or 100% Aventura zipline — the longest zipline in Latin America runs through the cloud forest above Monteverde.

Day 7

Transfer to Manuel Antonio

Long transfer day (4–5 hours by road + ferry). Arrive at Manuel Antonio area. Dinner and rest.

Days 8–9

Manuel Antonio National Park

Visit the park early (opens 7am, closes at 4pm, entry capped). Sloths hanging in the trees outside the entrance. Capuchin monkeys on the beach. The beach inside the park (Playa Espadilla Sur) is one of the best in Central America. Afternoon: Boca Negra beach club or Arenas del Mar infinity pool.

Day 10

Kayaking & Whale Watching (Seasonal)

Sea kayaking around the Manuel Antonio marine environment. December–April and July–October: humpback whales frequently pass through Ballena Marine National Park (30 min south). Whale watching tour if timing aligns.

Day 11

Surf Lesson or Waterfall

Surf lessons at Playa Biesanz (calmer water, good for beginners). Or: Nauyaca Waterfalls — horseback ride or hike to a stunning 45-meter waterfall with swimming hole.

Day 12

Departure

Domestic flight or drive back to San José for international departure. Manuel Antonio to SJO airport is about 3.5 hours — allow plenty of time.

When to Go

December–April (Pacific dry season). The Caribbean coast has different patterns — drier in September–October. May–November is green season on the Pacific side: lower rates, lush scenery, afternoon rain.

Worth Knowing

September–October are the wettest months on the Pacific coast, though the Caribbean is drier. Roads in remote areas can become impassable during heavy rain.

Best For

  • Families (excellent infrastructure, safe, English widely spoken)
  • Adventure travelers of any age
  • Wildlife and nature enthusiasts
  • Couples wanting active adventure over passive beach holidays

Budget Guide

Value

$2,000–$3,500/person

Mid-range cabinas and small hotels, shared tours, most meals at local sodas (Costa Rican diners)

Comfortable

$4,000–$6,500/person

Boutique eco-lodges, private or small-group guided tours, zipline and rainforest experiences, evening hot springs

Luxury

$8,000–$13,000/person

Si Como No or Arenas del Mar (Manuel Antonio), El Silencio Lodge or Nayara Springs (Arenal), private naturalist guides, chartered transport

Manuel Antonio National Park limits daily visitors — entry fills fast during peak season and must be reserved online. Naturalist-guided tours are worth the extra cost; they spot wildlife you'd walk right past.
