Belize

Best Months

November–May (dry season)

Trip Length

8–12 days

Best For

Adventure and nature travelers, Divers and snorkelers (reef is world-class)

The second-largest barrier reef in the world. A dozen Maya ruins still half-hidden in the jungle. And a country small enough that you can combine both in one trip.

Why Go

  • The Belize Barrier Reef is the longest in the Western Hemisphere and one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. The Great Blue Hole alone draws divers from everywhere.

  • The Cayo District (inland) gives you a completely different Belize — Maya ruins at Xunantunich and Caracol, cave tubing through ancient ceremonial caves, jungle canopy ziplines.

  • It's English-speaking, US-dollar friendly, and a short flight from most US gateways. The logistics are simple even if the experiences are remarkable.

  • Wildlife is serious: tapirs, jaguars (Cockscomb Basin is the world's first jaguar sanctuary), scarlet macaws, howler monkeys. Belize over-delivers for nature travelers.

Sample 8–12 days Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival — Belize City & Transfer

Land at Philip Goldson International Airport. Fly or boat to your first base. Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) for beach and reef, or directly into Cayo District for jungle first.

Days 2–4

Ambergris Caye — Reef

Snorkeling or diving the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley (harmless nurse sharks and stingrays). Day trip to the Great Blue Hole (boat or small plane — worth it). Golf carts are how you get around San Pedro — rent one.

Day 5

Caye Caulker (Optional)

30-minute water taxi from San Pedro. Smaller, quieter, no cars. 'Go Slow' is the island motto. Good for a slower day between activities.

Day 6

Transfer to Cayo District

Small plane from San Pedro to San Ignacio (about 30 minutes vs. 3+ hours by road). Check into a jungle lodge. Evening relaxation.

Day 7

ATM Cave

Actun Tunichil Muknal — the most extraordinary cave in Central America. Swim and hike through underground chambers containing Mayan ceramic artifacts and human remains, undisturbed since they were placed there. One of the most memorable experiences in Belize (guided only, no cameras — protects the site).

Day 8

Xunantunich Maya Ruins

El Castillo pyramid (130 feet tall, can be climbed), views over Guatemala across the Mopan River. Afternoon: San Ignacio's Saturday market or cooking class with local ingredients.

Day 9

Caracol & Butterfly Falls

Caracol — the largest Maya site in Belize, in the deep jungle (4WD track required). Fewer visitors than Xunantunich, more atmospheric. Butterfly Falls and natural pools on the way back.

Day 10

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

World's first jaguar sanctuary. Excellent waterfall hike. Spotting jaguars is not guaranteed (they're nocturnal) but tracking, ocelots, peccaries, and river otters are realistic.

Days 11–12

Placencia (Optional) & Departure

Fly or drive to Placencia — a beach peninsula on the Southern coast, smaller and more local-feeling than Ambergris. Good for a final beach day before departure from Belize City.

When to Go

November–May (dry season). The reef is best December–April when water visibility peaks. Late April–May is the shoulder window — fewer tourists, still good conditions.

Worth Knowing

June–October is the rainy/hurricane season. Roads into Cayo can flood. Reef visibility decreases. Not a dealbreaker but requires flexibility.

Best For

  • Adventure and nature travelers
  • Divers and snorkelers (reef is world-class)
  • Couples who want more than a beach trip
  • Families comfortable with active itineraries
