Is the drink package actually worth it?

It's worth it when the drinks and other included beverages you'd realistically buy exceed the package's total daily cost: packages typically run $60–100+ per person per day, and the researched rule of thumb is roughly five to seven alcoholic drinks a day to break even, or four to five once specialty coffee, soda, and water add real value.

The Honest Math

Package prices vary meaningfully by line and even by ship within a line, so run the numbers for your actual sailing: our free calculator at /cruise-drink-calculator does it for the whole cabin, gratuity included. Count what you'd genuinely order: including the non-alcoholic items packages usually cover, against the package's daily price plus any added gratuity.

Count your port days honestly. A day ashore is a day you're mostly not drinking on the ship, and the package charges you for it anyway. Port-heavy itineraries are where packages most often lose.

The non-financial case is real, though: some people simply cruise happier with zero bar-tab math. If that's you, the package is buying peace of mind, not drinks: a legitimate purchase, just name it correctly.

Before You Buy

Some fares and promotions bundle a beverage package, compare the bundled fare against the base fare plus separately purchased extras before assuming the bundle wins. Pre-cruise pricing is lower than onboard pricing, as of September 2026 the onboard premium on the majors runs roughly $5–6 per person per day, and the real savings come from pre-cruise sales that can take 20–30% off; some lines let you cancel and rebuy at the lower price before sailing. Buy early, and check the price again before final payment. And if your line requires the other eligible adults in the stateroom to buy a package too, calculate the cost for everyone that rule covers, not just yourself.

Accurate as of September 2026; cruise-line policies change, and your line's own documents govern. When in doubt, ask your line, or ask us, which is free and comes with opinions.
